The core competency of Chesapeake PERL’s larval system is speed, flexibility and scalability. Starting with a recombinant baculovirus, we can provide initial samples of protein-containing biomass for preliminary analysis in less than two weeks and can scale immediately to kilogram quantities in our automated production facility. We can provide large quantities of a single protein or smaller quantities of multiple proteins, a capability useful for activity screening, including mutant banks.
We have found that compared to the homogeneity of cultured cells, the tissue heterogeneity of larvae can be a significant advantage for difficult to produce proteins: larvae can out-produce cultured cells by significant margins for many proteins.
Our production takes place in an advanced, automated facility for the mass rearing of insects under carefully optimized and controlled conditions. With this facility we can produce protein-containing larvae at scales of up to tens of kilograms per week.
