Chesapeake PERL, Inc. (C-PERL) is a custom protein production (expression and recovery) service provider. C-PERL was founded in 2000 in the Technology Advancement Program (TAP) at the University of Maryland. We use baculovirus infection of whole Trichoplusia ni (T. ni) insect larvae exclusively for protein production. Our primary focus is to supply proteins to biotechnology communities from our unique production platform called the PERLXpress System.
Potential applications for proteins produced in the PERLXpress system include use in therapeutics, diagnostics, industrial enzymes, agriculture, bioremediation, biotechnology tools and other applications.
C-PERL possesses a completely operational, protein expression facility, capable of expressing gram quantities of recombinant protein in insect biomass. The facility is located in the Delaware Industrial Park at 7 McMillan Way, Newark, Delaware within 8,000 square feet of leased space. The facility was originally built in 1999 as a pilot plant for the development of a manufacturing process for biological pesticides. In 2000, C-PERL acquired the facility and modified it for production of recombinant protein products using our proprietary PERLXpress technology platform. We opened this facility in the Fall of 2001 and have maintained continuous operations without a single occurrence where a production objective was delayed due to a manufacturing failure. The facility is designed for the automated growth, infection and harvest, of up to 1.0MM larvae per week, equating to approximately 160Kg of larval biomass.
In 2004 C-PERL leased 7,500 sq. ft. of laboratory and office space at 8510A Corridor Rd. in Savage, Maryland to establish its corporate head quarters. We currently occupy approximately 50% of the space for our corporate, molecular biology and purification activities. The remainder of laboratory space in Savage is leased to other companies.
