Management Team



Chesapeake PERL is well staffed with individuals skilled in molecular biology, insect husbandry, protein expression and purification, quality control, quality assurance and program management.  Our staff includes employees with advanced degrees of three PhDs, two MBAs and one MDs, as well as scientific staff with several decades of collective protein purification process development and production experience.

 John Lee Compton, Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, was a co-founder of AgriVirion, Inc., the originator of C-PERL’s proprietary POV oral inoculation technology, and has extensive experience with the in vivo baculovirus platform. Before AgriVirion he spent four years as Director of Product Development at ImClone Systems, working with the DNA probe and immunology programs. He served for eight years on the board and executive committee of the New York Biotechnology Association and currently is chair of the executive committee on the New York Biodiversity Research Institute. Dr. Compton holds an M.B.A. from New York University, a Ph.D. in Biophysics and Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology and an A.B. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Yale College.  George Buchman, Ph.D., Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, has nearly 20 years of industrial biotechnology experience across scientific and business disciplines. At Celera Genomics and Gene Logic, his business development and client program management provided exposure to the technical needs of pharmaceutical, biotechnology and government partners. He spent 13 years with Invitrogen/Life Technologies/GIBCO in diagnostic and research product development, manufacturing, process development and custom product manufacture, with emphasis on bacterial fermentation, cell culture and protein purification.  David C. Davis, Vice President of Manufacturing, is an expert in the mass rearing of insects. He is the technical authority for the design and commissioning of C-PERL’s insectary facility and has responsibility for all of C-PERL’s protein expression operations. He has 20 years of industrial manufacturing experience of biological products, including employment as a Biologist at DuPont from 1986 to 2001 where he won several awards for his contributions in insect rearing and for his role in the establishment of a microbial insecticide discovery group. Mr. Davis received his M.B.A. from Goldey-Beacom College of Business and a B.S. in Entomology and Plant Pathology from the University of Delaware. (Learn more)
 ControllerThomas E. McDonald, Controller. For the nine years before joining C-PERL Mr. McDonald was Controller at Osiris Therapeutics, Inc., a Baltimore, Maryland-based cell therapy company. Prior that position he spent 16 years Automatic Data Processing, Inc. in various financial management positions. Mr. McDonald holds a B.S. degree in accounting from Tennessee Wesleyan College.
 Quality AssuranceTracy L. Thor, Director Quality Assurance. For six years before joining C-PERL Ms. Thor was a CGMP Compliance Consultant with Phoenix Imperative/AMEC BioPharmaceuticals, an international consulting firm. Prior to that position she spent 11 years in quality assurance positions at biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms including North American Vaccine, Inc., Oncor, Inc. and Bio Science Contract Production Corp.
