Company Profile

Chesapeake PERL, Inc. (Protein Expression and Recovery Laboratories) was founded in 1998 in the Technology Advancement Program (TAP) at the University of Maryland.   In 2000 C-PERL acquired a 4,000 sq. ft. pilot plant located in the Delaware Industrial Park at 7 McMillan Way, Newark, Delaware. In 2002 C-PERL and AgriVirion, Inc. merged, combining C-PERL's insect production capabilities with AgriVirion's oral inoculation technology, licensed from Boyce Thompson Institute of Technology in Ithaca, New York.

The Newark facility was originally built for the development of a manufacturing process for biological pesticides.  C-PERL modified it for the production of recombinant proteins and began operations in the fall of 2001.  In 2002 it was expanded to 8,000 sq. ft.  The production system is highly automated and tightly controlled.  It has maintained continuous operations since it was opened without a single production delay due to a manufacturing failure.

In 2004 C-PERL established its corporate headquarters in 7,500 sq. ft. of leased laboratory and office space at 8510A Corridor Rd. in Savage, Maryland.
